Padres Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Pardon the Padres if they have an uneasy night.

Adrian Gonzalez is hurting. And if he’s hurting badly, the worst offense in the major leagues becomes abysmal.

Gonzalez came out of Tuesday night’s game against the Astros at Petco Park with a strained right knee, suffering the injury sliding into third in the fourth inning on his first triple since April 22, 2008.

Gonzalez walked off the field under his own power after consulting with manager Bud Black and trainer Todd Hutcheson at the third base bag.

Eckstein gets big hit in Padres’ win over Astros (AP)

San Diego Padres' Chase Headley(notes) is greeted at the dugout after scoring in the Padres' three-run seventh inning rally that led to their 4-3 victory over the Houston Astros in a baseball game Tuesday, June 30, 2009, in San Diego. Headley started the rally with a base hit and one out.

Padres Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Adrian Gonzalez drew two more walks Monday night, giving him a major league-leading 32 in June.

The Padres first baseman goes into the final game of the month needing two walks to tie the franchise single-month record of 34 drawn by catcher Gene Tenace in July 1977.

Gonzalez had already eclipsed the Padres’ record for most walks ever drawn in June (previous record, 27, Rickey Henderson, 1996) and Monday night moved past Jack Clark (31, September, 1990) for the second-most walks drawn by a Padre in a single month.

Of course, the Gonzalez Walkathon is not necessarily good news for the Padres. One of his walks from Roy Oswalt on Monday night came when the Padres had runners on second and third with none out in the fourth.

Oswalt chose to walk Gonzalez rather…

The back of the Padresinjury-riddled starting rotation is in shambles.

A night after left-hander Wade LeBlanc pitched badly enough (four runs on five hits and three walks in 1 1/3 innings) in Seattle to be exiled to Class AAA Portland, right-hander Walter Silva pitched worse.

Silva gave up nine runs (eight earned) on seven hits and four walks in 2 1/3 innings to the Rangers in the 100-degree Texas heat.

LeBlanc and Silva have both made two starts since Jake Peavy and Chris Young went on the disabled list within days of one another earlier this month. LeBlanc had a 14.54 ERA for his two outings. Silva has a 12.91 ERA in his two.

Padres Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

With both Jake Peavy and Chris Young on the disabled list at least through the All-Star break, the Padres have been auditioning starting pitchers.

On Thursday, Wade LeBlanc became the first to fail the test.

The 24-year-old left-hander, who was the Padres‘ second-round pick in 2006, was optioned back to Class AAA Portland on Thursday afternoon shortly after giving up four runs on five hits in 1 1/3 innings in the Padres‘ 9-3 loss in Seattle.

Promoted from Portland after Peavy and Young both went on the disabled list earlier this month, LeBlanc gave up seven runs on eight hits and five walks in just 4 1/3 innings over two starts.

Padres Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

When a team is struggling, silver linings take on strange forms.

Take Padres right-handed starter Josh Geer, for example. On Wednesday night in Seattle, Geer gave up a three-run homer to Russell Branyan. And that was not bad news.

Two starts ago, Geer gave up four homers. In his previous start, he gave up two—both to Seattle center fielder Franklin Gutierrez.

On the season, Geer has served up 17 homers—which equals the second-highest total in the National League—in just 66 1/3 innings, a rate of 2.3 homers every nine innings.

Geer has given up at least one home run in each of his 11 starts, although Branyan’s slot was the first that yielded more than two runs.

Progress.

And after Wednesday night’s homer, Geer retired 13 of…
